University of Illinois Consent Form

This is a research project that will investigate how interactive media affects the way people think about science problems. The project is being conducted by Professor Robb Lindgren and graduate students in Educational Psychology and Curriculum & Instruction at UIUC.

You have been invited to participate in a series of three interviews where you will be interviewed by a researcher. In these interviews you will be asked to solve some science problems similar to ones you may have encountered in school. During the interviews, you may be given some digital resources to help you think about the science problems. As you are working on these problems you will be asked to describe what you are thinking. We are interested in your reasoning and not whether your answers are correct.

Your name will not be associated with any of the data that we collect in this study. We will assign you a “participant number” that will not be connected with your name. All data will be labeled with this number. However, we would like to video record the interviews in order to improve our methods and to better understand your thinking. Please indicate at the bottom of this form whether we have your permission to video record and how we can use this video.

Some students feel discomfort when talking aloud about their understanding of science problems. These problems are meant to be challenging and so you should not feel anxious if you do not know the answer. However, if working on these problems does cause stress, you always have the option to stop the session. This study does provide benefits for you. Students usually find these interviews and science problems enjoyable. We expect you will learn more about science in the process.

Your participation is completely voluntary, and you are free to withdraw at any time. If you complete all 3 sessions of this study you will receive $30 in total ($5 for the first session, $10 for the second, and $15 for the third), Each interview will take approximately one hour to complete.

You will receive a copy of this form. If you have questions about the research, please contact Dr. Robb Lindgren at or call 217.244.3655, or Jina Kang ( If you have questions about your rights as a research participant please contact the Institutional Review Board at 217-333-2670 or

I understand this informed consent form and consent to participate. I am 18 years of age or older.

Do we have your permission to video record you while you work on science problems, and to use this video for research purposes (internal researchers meetings, presentations at academic conferences, and college-level courses)? This means that the video will be shown to research team members for analysis and discussion in team meetings. The video may also be used in a PowerPoint presentation at an academic conference or workshop by members of the research team. It may also be shown in college courses on topics related to the research being conducted. In all cases video shown for these purposes will not be distributed publicly online.
